The Beginning . . .

Macknit grew out of an organisation of enthusiastic knitters who originally ran a function called NSW Machine Knitters Seminar after having attended similar function in other states (mainly SA).

Planning began in November 1981 with a committee of Co-Ordinator Dawn Sherriff, Secretary Pat Peters, Treasurer John Unsworth {husband of a knitter).  Plus Representatives of the 3 Major Machines ot that time Jean Ford for Singer, Joyce Cave for Brother & Eleanor Goldfinch for Passap. The Seminar was held over 3 days 20th -22nd August 1982 at The lnstitute of Technology, Broadway. Over 500 people attended with Lectures and Demonstrations presented by the knitters involved in machine knitting of that era.

The profit from this venture was invested with plans for future functions. After a few false starts in 1985 the Macknit we know today came into existence.  We became Incorporated in August l995.

ln the early days we had many country members and held twice yearly country delegates workshops. The notes from these workshops were compiled into the" NSW Delegates Magazine" and later "Down under Machine Knitting which unfortunately ceased when Althea Lutz who was the editor passed away. Over the years Macknit has hosted many special workshops from both local and interstate knitters as well as many well known overseas names e.g. Susanna Lewis, Denise Musk, Irene Krieger, Kathleen Kinder, Eileen Levy, Dianne Bennett, Ruth Lee, carl Boyd, Susan Guagliumi, Betty Abbott and Eileen Montgomery.
